Liverpool concludes Europa League group stage with defeat against Union Saint-Gilloise

Jarell Quansah scored his first Liverpool goal in his 12th appearance for the club

Liverpool, already qualified for the Europa League last 16, concluded their group stage with an away 2-1 defeat against Union Saint-Gilloise.

In their final Europa League group stage match, the already-qualified Liverpool faced a setback, suffering an away defeat against Union Saint-Gilloise in Belgium.

Jurgen Klopp’s youthful squad found themselves trailing in the 32nd minute as Mohamed Amoura skillfully maneuvered around goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher to secure the opening goal.

Responding swiftly, twenty-year-old center-half Jarell Quansah netted his inaugural goal for Liverpool with a powerful strike from within the penalty area, leveling the score.

However, the hosts reclaimed the lead just before halftime courtesy of Cameron Puertas’ well-placed low shot, ultimately securing the victory.

Puertas, though, had a potential second goal disallowed for handball after a thorough review by the video assistant referee.

Despite this defeat, Liverpool clinched the top spot in Group E with 12 points from six games. Union Saint-Gilloise, the leaders of the Belgian league, finished third and will move on to the Europa Conference League play-offs in February.
