Lionel Messi scores 100th Argentina goal in 17-minute hat-trick against Curacao

Lionel Messi scored his 100th international goal with a 17-minute hat-trick in Argentina’s 7-0 friendly victory over Curacao on Tuesday night.
The Paris Saint-Germain forward had already reached a significant milestone during the international period when he registered his 800th career goal in a 2-0 victory against Panama.

Messi’s sublime free-kick in Thursday’s win over Panama also left him on 99 international goals ahead of the meeting with Curacao.

The 35-year-old needed just 20 minutes to bring up his century at the Estadio Unico Madre de Cuidades, firing a low shot into the bottom corner.

Nico Gonzalez quickly added another and the Fiorentina man provided the pass for Messi to guide home his second goal of the evening just after the half-hour mark.

The world champions made it four through Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez, and Messi quickly wrapped up his ninth international hat-trick in the 37th minute.

Messi latched onto Giovanni Lo Celso’s lofted through ball, before calmly slotting past Eloy Room in the Curacao goal.

Angel Di Maria’s 78th-minute penalty and a late strike from Gonzalo Montiel rounded off a comfortable win, extending Argentina’s unbeaten run in friendlies to 15 games.

As a result of his opener, Messi became just the third player in men’s football to reach a century of international goals.

The Argentine’s 102-goal tally is only bettered by former Iran international Ali Daei (109) and Portugal’s Cristiano Ronaldo (122).

End of line
